Founded by Patrick Taylor, Quality Carpentry was born from a passion for helping families create outdoor spaces that are as enjoyable and functional as their homes. When did you start your business, and what inspired you to create it?
I started Quality Carpentry in 2011. Building custom homes for families was incredibly rewarding. As a framer by trade, I was inspired by new tv shows at the time to help people transform and enjoy their backyards as well!
What are the most popular outdoor living trends you’re seeing in your area today, and how do you think these trends will evolve over the next few years?
PVC decking is becoming increasingly popular as homeowners recognize the value of long-lasting products, much like the materials used in their homes. The low maintenance and appeal of these durable outdoor spaces are encouraging more families to spend time outside. I believe deck covers and accessories, such as BBQ areas and patio heaters, will continue to grow in popularity as they extend the outdoor season in Canada.
How do you customize your designs to meet clients’ needs?
We take advantage of the existing home structure, considering space for walkways and sightlines to maximize areas for lounging, dining, and cooking.
Are there any standout features you’re particularly proud of in past projects?
Inspired by other talented builders, we’ve created several curved deck edges and accessory features that are not only highly functional but also visually stunning.
When it comes to bending and curving decking, what is your process?
We use silicone heat blankets to make the decking malleable enough to fit into custom-made templates. Once the shapes are formed, we use them as a guide to ensure the structure aligns perfectly.
Tell us about your team—how do you all work together to deliver high-quality projects?
Our team has extensive experience across all areas of residential construction, including new builds, major renovations, and even years of experience in real estate. This expertise, combined with our strong relationships with manufacturers like Wolf, allows us to be creative and build structures that stand the test of time.
What are the most popular decking color combinations among your clients?
Wolf Serenity Amberwood is our favorite and a top choice among our clients. However, I’m also in love with the recently released Ashland and Beechwood colors. We were fortunate to use Ashland for our first deck of the season, and it truly stands out with its sleek, modern look.
